Perfusate and Blood Substitutes
Back to Products
"Perfusate" refers to the fluid that is used for perfusion, and perfusion is the act of pouring over or the passage of a fluid (perfusate) through the vascular bed of a specific organ such as the heart, kidneys, the liver and so on. Perfusate carries oxygen and nutrients to and carbon dioxide and toxic material away from the tissues in the process of perfusion of a specific organ.
For oxygen delivery, perfusate may not contain any specific oxygen
carrier molecules and therefore, the oxygen and carbon dioxide careering
capacities of the perfusate is based on the amount of oxygen that is
dissolved in the water constituent of a given perfusate. In the exceptional case when a perfusate contains specific oxygen carrier molecules (e.g. Perfluorocarbon, Hemoglobin, etc.), it is referred to as blood substitute.
Life Systems Corp. is in the business of introducing an advanced
perfusate for biomedical research and clinical applications to be used
in its LifeSustainersT systems. The Company, currently, has executed a
non-disclosure agreement with a University to license their invented
oxygen carrier to be used in the Company's perfusate product for
biomedical research and clinical applications.
